Saarland nano companies, the Leibniz Institute for New Materials and gwSaar have united to launch Saarland Empowering Nano - and make Saarland Europe's nano capital.

What is Saarland Empowering Nano - a magazine?

Flackus: It's more than that. Saarland Empowering Nano is the platform for Saarland nanotechnology - uses and products. We do joint PR and marketing plus congresses and the like.
Hauptmann: We boost Saarland's image as Europe's nano capital. We host events in Germany and abroad to attract investment in Saarland's nanotech companies and open new markets for their products.

What makes Saarland a nano center?

Flackus: Saarland saw nanotech's huge economic potential early on. More than a dozen nano companies are already here, with nearly a thousand employees. Political support is strong, bureaucracy minimal.
Hauptmann: Saarland has always meant industry. Momentum in a small place spurs quick decisions, action. Our companies are young and dynamic. They know their markets. They supply all kinds of industries with high-tech products.

How does Saarland rate globally as a nano site?

Flackus: Top-of-the-line. The blend of top-level research and products is virtually unique.
Hauptmann: We've made our mark - 200-odd patents and cooperations in Japan, Korea and the USA. Global players like Siemens, Samsung, PPG Industries - they all come to Saarland for know-how. We're constantly asked to conferences and workshops abroad. Internationally, we're a full screen item.

Where will nano capital Saarland be in 2015?

Flackus: Nanotech isn't a mass production element yet. But it will be. And when it is, we'll see more jobs, more companies, more turnover.
Hauptmann: Nanotechnology will grow in itself, of course. But it is already set to give industry a competitive edge. We'll see a lot of permanent jobs emerging here in Saarland - for people with the right qualifications. We're working on that, too - together.
